Social Graces
Social graces are skills used to interact politely in social situations. They include manners, etiquette (the specific
accepted rules within a culture for the application of universal manners), deportment and fashion. These skills were once taught to young women at a finishing school or charm school. The focus of social graces has changed over the last century, recently with an emphasis on business etiquette and international protocol.

ReplyDeleteWe need to place more emphasis on social graces in our schools. All of us as teachers must integrate it in our lesson plans.

ReplyDeleteSocial grace are important in our daily lives. However, when we speak of social graces, people almost always think of "at the dinner table conduct". For consideration, we can explore social graces in terms of:
- conduct on the road (road etiquette)
- conduct on the internet (webetiquette)
In relation to conduct on the road, many Jamaican driver need a quick lesson on how to conduct themselves in a decent manner in traffic. To use someone else's phrase, they need a fast food remedy.
Maybe we can take a page from history, dust it off and start again by having finishing school - not only for girls but boys too.
ReplyDeleteSome effort is many by some guidance counsellors at the start of secondary school. This should really be done throughout primary and secondary school and then a comprehensive course at the end of the five years of secondary education.
We would probably have a more genteel society! Wouldn't that be wonderful.
Social graces inside and outside of the classroom need to be reinstated. Manners and courtesy are not things of the past and WE all need to make a conscious effort to revive...it is then that we will see a radical change in society! And we will now know how to treat with each other.
ReplyDeleteOh! Wow and don't get me started about chivalry. That is another issue. What say you?
